An active RAF bombing range would seem to most to be a odd choice for bringing your newborn into thw world, however at Donna Nook a colony of Grey (Atlantic) seals have chosen to do just that. Donna Nook is one of the most accessible sites for seeing seals at a time of breeding in the UK. About a 50 metre walk from the public car park at Stonebridge and you are amongst the sand dunes and there, fenced off from the public, are the Seals with their pups. It's amazing to see them this close up, being literally a few metres from you on the other side of the fence. If, however, you are prepared to walk about a kilometre over mud flats, you can head to the sand banks where the bulk of the colony are. There are no fences to protect you from the seals, so constant awareness and caution are required. As long as you don't cause any upset to them you can get up very close to them and get some great photos. A great day out, but if you had out over the mud flats makes sure you've got your wellies! |
