Pisa, Italy |

Leg two of our journey took us to Pisa in Italy. Departing Menton at about 10:30am, we drove into Italy sticking as close to the coast as we could. Not too sure where we going to end up, we kept driving hoping that some nice coastal resort would just present itself to us. After passing through Genova, we noticed that Pisa wasn't that much further and decided to make for there, after all we'd both heard of it. Pisa is some 10km from the coast. We camped at Campeggio Internazionale in the coastal resort of Marina di Pisa, arriving there a little after 18:00. The city of Pisa itself was somewhat run-down, in a poor state of repair. With the exception of the Campo dei Miracoli (the field of miracles), where the famous leaning tower can be found, there isn't much to do - unless you're really into your architecure. The condition of Pisa re-enforced a comment made by a French waiter in Menton, that as soon as we crossed the border into Italy we would notice the difference immediatley becuase nobody cares about the towns in Italy and so they just fall into a state of ill repair. That said the Campo dei Miracoli is worth the visit. There are four great religious edifices to be found in this wide, walled area: the Duomo, the Leaning Tower, the Baptistery and the Camposanto. Whilst it's worth a day visit, I wouldn't plan to stay in Pisa any longer than is necessary. The photos that were taken in Pisa were not the best - so I had a bit of play with them in photoshop. The ones that were really played about with stand out quite a bit - but I thought they added some interest to photos that were otherwise quite bland. |
