Basilica of San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice

Fri, 5th August 2005

Situated on its own island directly facing the Doge Palace, the Basilica of San Giorgio Maggiore has been present for the entire history of Venice, enjoying periods of wealth and prosperity as well as the trials and tribulations that have beset Venice over the years. The Benedictine Abbey has been destroyed and reconstructed on five sepearate occasions before taking on it present grandeur.

From the steps of the abbey you get an amazing view of the skyline of Venice, and was the position from which I captured the later shots of the sun setting over the city.
